Kane applied for a position on a Hudson's Bay Co. sponsored expedition to Labrador with Henry Youle Hind.
Unfortunately, Kane had dedicated his book to his friend and patron George Allen. Sir George Simpson as head of the Company who had made Kane's journey possible felt slighted. He sent out word that Kane was "not to be countenanced by any officers in the service." Kane was turned down.
