May 28. Much rain in the night. Morning cold with rain & fog. Strong E.N.E. wind. Left camp about 9 A.M. & travelled West along the line about 16 miles. About noon cleared up & ceased raining though wind continued. Stopped about an hour & a half at noon & got into camp early.
Country passed over undulating prairie with occasional small swamps willow fringed & now vividly green with strong young grass.
Crossed several coulées which run into the Pembina R the timber of which is clearly visible to the North.
Country has been completely burned over last fall or early this spring. On such ground the flowering plants come up early & soon bloom but remain small & stunted.
Drift. At Evg. camp 54 m. West of principal Manitoba Meridian. Pebbles gathered promiscuously from badger hill consisted of: Limestone, white of usual appearance 40. Granitoid & gneissic rocks generally of pink tints 25. Felspar[sic] 1. Pebbles chiefly or entirely of quartz 8. Yellow chert 2. Dark rocks, probably Huronian 4. Soft reddish decomp. rock 1. Grey, probably part of a nodule from Cretaceous shale 1. Many small splinters of Long R. Shale, fragments of former pebbles.
Many old buffalo roads running N. Westerly.
