July 9. Did not get away from camp till 8.30. About 41-2 m. W. found Capt. F's road joining in. A note to say that he had arrived there at 8.30 the previous morning. Stopped for lunch after having come 11 miles at the usual style of creek viz a great wide valley with a little deep ditch meandering in the bottom & some muddy pools of luke warm water in its bed. Found that the tent 'had fallen out of waggon & had to send Nillson [sic] back for it in the buckboard about 4 miles.

Camped for night about 45 m. W. of Woody Mt.near a swamp with good grass & a creek withpools of good water.

The grasshoppersfor the last few days very numerous. Now well able to fly & may be seenpassing along in the direction of the wind.in that part of the sky nearthe sun, at great heights. When rising from the ground & flying backwith the wind in one's face inflict painful blows, especially when theyhappen to light in one's eye. Their appearance in passing before the sun more like drifting snowflakes than any thing else.

Saw dark coloured bank in valley where made noon halt. ? if it might be a tongue of sombre clays coming in from N.

The ridge to S. & N. still apparent. That to S. tending Southwards.

The country rather more arid than that passed over yesterday.

The watershed between the valley running Nwards (the waters of which probably all lose themselves or empty into alkaline lakes) & those running Swards must lie near this evening camp & probably between 100 & 200 feet above it. Its general direction must be about W.N.W.

July 10. Got off at 7.40 & travelled on over rather hilly roads to a large ravine where stopped for lunch having come about 12 3/4 miles. Found numerous interesting Cretaceous Fossils here.

Reached White Mud R. Depot about 6.30 P.M. after a long day having made about 251-2 m. Found only Depot man & one other man here. Depot tent & one H.B. tent. Capt. Featherstone started West yesterday
