situation & finally decided best to go round by Woody Mt for new cart as all stuff cannot be crowded into wagon. Got Capt. LH's people to take some not immediately needed & to leave it for me at White Mud R. in case of my not catching up, which is hardly probable I can do when making such a detour.

Leut. Greene & party left W. via Ft. N.G.Turney this morning at 4AM. Capt. FH saw Gregory & party camped on N. bank Frenchman's Cr. or White Mud R. this morning.

July 7. Left camp by 5.30 A.M. with Capt. LH's party & travelled N. on the road to Woody Mt. as far as the wooded [?] coul6e. Halted for lunch then continued along the road for some miles before Capt. FH turned off N.W. to strike the road to White Mud Depot. Travelled on to Creek 7 m. from Woody Mt. Then being anxious to reach there to see about getting new cart tonight. Took the horses out for a few minutes, gave them a feed of oats & then went on. Arrived well before dark having come 32 miles. Found Boswell at depot which otherwise nearly deserted. The half-breeds have all left taking their carts with them & seems impossible to replace them.

The broad disc- leaved cactus has now almost ceased flowering having been at its best a very short time. Many of the plants are covered with white owing to the dampness of the season.

Geol. The improvement in the appearance of the country on passing from the sombre clays to the lignite tertiary section [?] is remarkable. Grass everywhere greener & more luxuriant. The bad effect of the U. S. ..... which I correlate with the sombre clays has been already observed (I think) in Hayden's explorations.

In examining the bank at noon halting place 19 m. S.W. of Woody Mt. found several seams of lignite that already mentioned on first visit. The entire thickness as things are at present. The banks & associated clays copious springs of good water which has however a very slight ferriginous taste. It seems very cold in this hot weather though only running 46 F.
