Aug 27 Gregary & party including Dr. Coues went off early bound E. for the Buttes. Boswell a good deal better. Set off for depot 30 m E of this with Ward.

Morning changed plants & arranged specimens of rocks &c afternoon walked down the lake about 11/2 m to a point chosen beforehand to get a geol. sketch of one of the mountains. Also took a couple of water-colour sketches of the Lake. Ashe & party return having completed traverse line up Pass to watershed.

A very perfect double lunar rainbow visible about 8.45 P.M. The colour of the inner very distinct. The whole placed in exact symmetry over one of the ranges of mountains & looking like a giagantic frame.

Lake under the influence of the strong & continuous S wind making a noise like the sea.
